Explanation of the assessment guidelines
Bloem Sealants launches its latest innovation in sustainable and strong bonding of (among other things) wooden frames, windows, and doors.
With the introduction of Bloem MSP-Woodgrip®D4, Bloem Sealants takes a new step forward in efficiency and reliability for the carpentry industry. Thanks to its excellent adhesion to hard, soft, and exotic wood species, including Accoya, Meranti, Merbau, Red Grandis, and Sapeli, this adhesive is suitable for the most demanding applications in both interior and exterior work. This ultra-strong, waterproof wood adhesive is unique in its class. It is the only D4 wood adhesive with two KOMO® product certificates, namely BRL0819 for window frames and BRL2339 for windows and doors.
- TWO Certificates
- ONE Product
- ZERO Worries
Double security with one solution!
Until now, carpentry factories often had to switch between different adhesives for various applications. That’s past now: with MSP-Woodgrip®D4, all bonding can be done with one single product—from stiles and sills to finger joints and laminating. This not only saves time, but also prevents errors and simplifies quality control
BRL2339, Adhesives for non-load-bearing applications
BRL2339, issued by SKH on 6 September 2012, is the assessment guideline for the KOMO® product certificate “Adhesives for non-load-bearing applications.” This guideline is specifically focused on adhesives used in wooden components that do not have a structural function, such as façade cladding, cavity battens, or interior finishes, and therefore serves as a complement to BRL0819, which covers frame joints.
BRL2339 distinguishes between interior applications (use classes 1 and 2 according to NEN-EN 335) and exterior applications (class 3), and sets requirements for the moisture and temperature resistance of adhesives depending on their intended environment. Adhesives for outdoor use must meet at least class D4 (according to NEN-EN 204) and must have a shear strength of at least 5.5 N/mm² at elevated temperatures (according to NEN-EN 14257). Additional requirements apply to specific applications such as laminating, finger-jointing, and façade joinery. These applications are subject to durability tests (e.g., boiling tests or aging cycles involving moisture, heat, and frost) to verify long-term adhesion and structural integrity.
The certification process also includes a comprehensive quality system, internal inspections of raw materials and production, calibration of measuring equipment, and complaint management. The adhesive packaging must bear the KOMO® mark with the applicable category indicated (such as “Exterior general” or “Interior D3”). In doing so, BRL2339 provides clear and verifiable quality assurance for producers and users of adhesive systems in timber construction, with the aim of ensuring the durability, reliability, and safety of non-load-bearing wooden structures.**
BRL0819
The BRL0819, established by SKH on 12 October 2010, forms the national assessment guideline for the KOMO® certificate-with-product attestation “Connection techniques in wooden façade elements.” This guideline outlines the requirements, test methods, and quality criteria for connection techniques used in wooden frames, windows, and doors.
The purpose of BRL0819 is to ensure that the applied connecting materials—such as dowels, adhesives, and mortise-and-tenon joints—are sufficiently durable and functional for various exposure classes. These classes (A, B, and C) are derived from NEN-EN 335-1 and -2 and relate to the level of moisture and UV exposure the wood will face. Class A applies to interior applications without moisture exposure, class B to sheltered exterior applications, and class C to heavily exposed façade elements such as sills close to ground or water.
BRL0819 prescribes extensive testing, including fatigue tests, static load tests, and aging cycles in which connections are subjected to moisture, heat, and UV radiation. No cracking, wood degradation, or water penetration may occur. In addition to technical requirements, BRL0819 includes provisions for internal quality control, calibration of measuring equipment, complaint registration, and periodic external inspections by accredited bodies. Only connection materials that meet these requirements and bear the KOMO® mark may be used as certified components in wooden façade elements.
Thus, BRL0819 ensures not only the structural quality of connections but also the durability and reliability of wooden façade constructions in practical applications.
BRL0821
Glazing sealants play a crucial role in the durability, airtightness, and safety of glazing systems. To ensure that these products meet high quality standards, the Netherlands has a specific assessment guideline: BRL2801. This guideline forms the basis for the KOMO® product certificate for glazing sealants and guarantees that products demonstrably comply with strict technical and quality requirements.
BRL2801 is an assessment guideline established by the Expert Committee for Façades and issued by Kiwa Nederland B.V. The guideline describes the requirements that glazing sealants must meet in order to obtain a KOMO® Product Certificate. This certificate proves that an independently certified body monitors both the production process and the product quality.
BRL2801 applies to sealants used for sealing joints between glass and rebate surfaces in windows, doors, frames, and other timber, aluminum, or plastic constructions, in accordance with the Dutch Practice Guideline NPR 3577. As such, the guideline serves as a quality framework for both manufacturers and applicators in the construction sector
Within BRL2801, the products are tested on several essential characteristics that determine their performance in practice. The main tests are:
- Thermogravimetry (NEN-EN-ISO 11358-1): Used to determine the material’s stability by measuring mass loss during heating. The test shows whether the composition is consistent with the reference product.
- Specific density (NEN-EN-ISO 1183-1): This measurement provides insight into the mass and uniformity of the sealant; deviations greater than ±4% are not permitted.
- Shore A hardness (NEN-EN-ISO 868): After seven days of curing, the hardness must remain within ±5 Shore units. This ensures the correct balance between strength and flexibility.
- Resistance to moisture and UV (NEN-EN-ISO 11431): The sealant is subjected to moisture and UV exposure to simulate aging and degradation; no failure may occur according to NEN-EN-ISO 11600.
- Elastic recovery (NEN-EN-ISO 7389): A glazing sealant must show at least 60% elastic recovery after deformation.
- Classification according to NEN-EN 15651-2: This European standard determines the performance classes of glazing sealants (such as G25LM, G25HM, G20LM, or G20HM)
In addition to product requirements, BRL2801 also sets requirements for the producer’s internal quality control (IKB). Every manufacturer must have an internal control system in which formulations, raw materials, measuring equipment, and production processes are demonstrably monitored. The certification body conducts periodic assessments, during which market samples are taken and tested for the product characteristics mentioned above.
A product that meets BRL2801 and carries the KOMO® quality mark provides assurance to applicators, specifiers, and end users. It represents guaranteed quality, durable performance, and compliance with applicable building regulations. As such, BRL2801 forms the foundation for professional and sustainable glazing in the Netherlands
